During my BSc studies in urban planning the field of integration of migrants got my attention. I chose the
master's programme Migration and Ethnic Studies at the ISHSS because of the international atmosphere. Moreover, there was no other university in the
Netherlands that offered studies that focused on migration issues only.
The programme was intense, challenging and interesting! The courses offered a diversity of ways to look at the field of migration and ethnic issues. I enjoyed the flexibility in planning your own time as a student. This gave me the opportunity to enjoy the social live which is connected to the ISHSS. Hugo van Ballegooijen (Dutch) |
International migration has become a topical issue in public, political and academic debates both in Europe and elsewhere. The Master's programme in Migration and Ethnic Studies deals with the different forms, causes and consequences of international migration, and gives particular attention to the impact of globalisation, the regulation of international migration by authorities at different levels and the responses of international migrants to the changing opportunity structure. The programme also addresses issues of immigrant incorporation, assimilation and diversity in various social fields, including the labour market, education, politics and religion. An overall goal of the programme is to educate future world citizens by providing a general knowledge of theories and concepts as they have been developed in the field of migration and ethnic studies, as well as a thorough knowledge of theories and concepts of disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to more specific topics. It also aims to develop students' ability to critically evaluate theories and empirical studies in the field of migration and immigrant incorporation and to engage in (public) debate on topics related to this field.
The Master's programme in Migration and Ethnic Studies provides students with a solid theoretical, conceptual and methodological foundation in the social sciences. It offers students an interdisciplinary approach to major contemporary migration concerns. The historical and comparative dimensions emphasised in the majority of the courses train the student to analyse social and cultural issues in from various perspectives and to locate them in their various sociological, political and cultural contexts. The combination of empirical studies with theoretical reflection and reading provides the intellectual tools and skills that students need to better analyse and deal with the complexities of today's world.
The student's progress will be reviewed by means of regular contact with the academic adviser and programme manager, both individually and during group meetings. During the thesis-writing phase, students are expected to participate actively in the thesis seminar and to present their thesis proposals and one or more chapters. Upon completion of the programme, students will have acquired extensive knowledge of the theories and concepts used to research and analyse specific social and/or political problems. They will have learned how to analyse and evaluate social science theories, research methods and results from a critical perspective. In addition, students will have acquired advanced skills for analysing and summarising literature in their field of specialisation, and for placing that literature within larger historical and intellectual contexts. They will have learned how to conduct literature and data searches, design research projects, to write argumentative texts and present their research findings, scientific papers and policy papers. In order to complete their degree, students will have applied their knowledge in writing a research proposal and conducting empirical research for their Master's thesis.
Being part of an international programme will help the student to acquire the linguistic and social skills necessary to be able to work in an international, multicultural environment.
