Touraj Atabaki

Professor Touraj Atabaki studied theoretical physics (BSc, MSc) and history at National University of Iran and University of London. Worked at Utrecht University, where he acquired MA and PhD. Holds the endowed chair of “Social History of the Middle East and Central Asia” at the Department of Languages and Cultures of the Middle East of the Leiden University. He holds the Senior Research Fellow position at the International Institute of Social History in charge of the Department of the Middle East and Central Asia. Visiting senior research fellow, the Middle East Centre, St. Antony's College, University of Oxford. Visiting fellow at the Academy of Sciences of Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Touraj Atabaki is member of the Academic Committee of the International Institute of Asian Studies and member of editorial boards of: Journal of Iranian Studies, Journal of Azerbaijani Studies, Review of International Affairs, Journal of Iran and the Caucasus and Journal Central Asian Survey. Main research interest: Historiography of everyday life and comparative subaltern history.

Isabel Awad Cherit

Isabel Awad Cherit is a lecturer at the Department of Communication Science. Her research interests focus on journalism, media ethics, cultural diversity, and social inclusion. She is the academic advisor of the Master's programme in European Communication Science.

Michiel Baas

Michiel Baas (1975) obtained his BA degree in International Management in 1998, and studied Cultural Anthropology & Non-Western Sociology from 2000-2003. He did research among the IT professionals of Bangalore (India) for his MA thesis and graduated (cum laude) in December 2003. In March 2004 he joined the ASSR as a Ph.D. student. His project is entitled: Flexible Transnationalism - Displaced Indian Students In Between Legality and Illegality in India and Australia. This project deals with the legal and (semi-) illegal practices that new migrants make use of while making their way in the world.

Isa Baud

Isa Baud holds the International Development Studies chair at the Universiteit of Amsterdam.She is adjunct-director of the research institute AMIDSt and board member of the national research school CERES and one of three vice-presidents of the European Association of Development Institutes (EADI). She is also currently member of the international Advisory Board of the Institut Universitaire d’Etudes du Développement (Graduate Institute of Development Studies) in Geneva, and member of the EUDN, the European hub of the Global Development Network. Her research interests include: urban governance, urban environmental management, small-scale enterprise development, informal employment, and gender relations in economics. She is a member of the examination committee of the programme.

Michiel Baud

Michiel Baud is director of the Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation (CEDLA) and Professor of Latin American Studies (UvA). His current research interests are indigenista ideologies and their influence on present-day academic interpretations of the Andes, the role of ethnic movements in Latin American politics, the social history of Latin American borders, the analysis of Latin American modernity and the construction of collective memories in present-day Latin America.

Maarten Bavinck

Maarten Bavinck completed his masters in development sociology at the Free University of Amsterdam. After working as a consultant in the field of development co-operation for a number of years, he joined the University of Amsterdam in 1994, completing his Ph.D. four years later. Maarten Bavinck is director of the Center for Maritime Research (MARE), a joint initiative of the Universiteit van Amsterdam and Wageningen University. He is senior lecturer at the C.M. Kan Institute and attached to the Amsterdam Institute for Metropolitan and International Development Studies (AMIDSt). Special areas of interest include fisheries and fisheries management, governance of natural resources, and coastal zone development. Maarten's regional specialisation is South Asia.

Niels Beerepoot

Niels Beerepoot is academic advisor for the Master's programme in International Development Studies. He was trained at Utrecht University in International Economics and Economic Geography before he moved to the University of Amsterdam to pursue his PhD research. His research interests include: small enterprise development, entrepreneurship, industrial clustering, innovation systems and labour markets.

Peter van den Besselaar

Peter van Besselaar studied mechanical engineering ('propedeuse' degree) at the Technical University of Eindhoven, mathematics (BSc) at the University of Utrecht, and philosophy (MA) at the University of Amsterdam. He holds a PhD from the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Amsterdam. He worked as researcher at the Dutch Universities Joint Institute for Social Research (SISWO) and as a lecturer in the philosophy of science at the University of Amsterdam). Currently Van den Besselaar is associate professor of social aspects of information technology in the Department of Social Science Informatics. His research interests are: computers, employment and the workplace, science and technology studies, science and technology assessment, information science, groupware and community networks, design science and methodology.

Brian Burgoon

Brian Burgoon is a lecturer at the Department of Political Sciences. His current research focuses on national, international, and supranational political struggles over economic globalisation. He teaches a range of courses in international relations, comparative foreign policy, and international and comparative political economy.

Sébastien Chauvin

Sébastien Chauvin is an Assistant Professor at UvA’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and a researcher at IMES. His current areas of research range from labor sociology to gender studies, political ethnography and social movements, the sociology of race and immigration, sociological methods and social theory. In 2000-2001, he did research on sexual minority and transgender youth within African American underprivileged communities in Oakland, California. In 2002-2003, he studied sex worker movements in the Paris region. From 2003 to 2006, he taught as a visiting lecturer at the University of Chicago while conducting sociological fieldwork. His dissertation was an ethnographic study of mostly undocumented Hispanic immigrant day laborers in Chicago, including the staffing industry that employed them, and the social movements that mobilized them. From 2006 to 2008, he was a lecturer in sociology at the Université Paris 1-Panthéon Sorbonne. More recently has been working on a collective research exploring the labor-market experience and following the political mobilization of undocumented immigrant workers in France. He is currently studying the relationship between precarious work, the welfare state, and civic subordination in post-industrial societies, using the concept of “bridled citizenship.”

Sarah Coulthard

Sarah graduated from the University of York with a BSc in Ecology, Conservation and Environmental Science, which she followed with an Master's programme in Ecology at the University of Aberdeen. Sarah worked at the Amakhala Game Reserve, South Africa as an Ecologist before coming to Newcastle where she is currently studying for a PhD funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council on Integrated Coastal Management for Pulicat Lake a Coastal lagoon in South East India.

Will Critchley

Will Critchley is co-ordinator of the Natural Resource Management Unit of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam International Co-operation Centre, and involved in research and development programmes throughout Africa. His specialisations are the interface between people and their land, and the search to reconcile conservation of resources with sustained production. Farmer innovation in technology development within Africa is his current specific area of focus.

Johan Jeroen De Deken

Johan Jeroen De Deken is assistant professor in the department of sociology and anthropology. Previously he has taught at the Humboldt University in Berlin, at the Comenius University in Bratislava and at the Central European University in Prague. Currently his research interests include the impact of social policies on the labour supply; and the relationship between pension reform, financial systems, corporate governance and stake holding.

Ton Dietz

Ton Dietz is professor in political environmental geography at the University of Amsterdam, founding director of the research institute AGIDS (Amsterdam Research Institute for Global Issues and Development Studies) and member of the directorate of the Netherlands Research School for Resource Studies for Development (CERES). He did his PhD study among the Pokot in Kenya and his research activities are mainly on livelihood stress in drylands in Africa and India. He is currently involved in a major research project on the impact of climate change on tropical drylands. His research interests and experiences include: the geographical patterns of development aid, impact of climate change, transition to sustainable land use, entitlements to natural resources, pastoralism, livelihood security and geographical networks, impact of rural development programmes on poverty, and urban-rural linkages. He is a member of the examination committee of the programme.

Leo Douw

Leo Douw is a lecturer in Modern Chinese History and Society, both at the Universiteit van Amsterdam and at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. He is also a Fellow at the Amsterdam School for Social Science Research (ASSR). He specialises in the history of Chinese economic thought, ethnic Chinese transnational entrepreneurship and its impact on society, as well as politics in South China.

Enrique Gomezllata

Enrique Gomezllata (born Mexico City 1972) is a historian specialized in contemporary Mexico. He received his MA in Social Sciences from the ISHSS with the Thesis entitled ‘Mexican Politics Online’. The focus of this investigation was placed on communication technologies, specifically the Internet. Currently he is a doctoral student in the Department of Communication Sciences at the University of Amsterdam. The main topics of his doctoral Thesis are globalisation, communication technologies and the social, economic and political problematic in Latin America. The working title of his dissertation (in progress) is ‘Globalisation and Communication Technologies in Contemporary Mexico’.

Cees Hamelink

Cees Hamelink is a professor of International Communication at the Department of Communication Science. He studied moral philosophy and psychology at the UvA. He held several offices in international organisations and was President of the International Association for Mass Communication Research (1990-1994). At present he is theEditor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Communication Studies "Gazette". Cees Hamelink has lectured at universities in more than 45 countries, has produced numerous articles and books on international communication, culture human rights and information technology. His specialisations include: world communication and human rights.

Michaela Hordijk

Michaela Hordijk is Human Geographer and completed her PhD study on Community Participation in Urban Environmental Management in Lima. She is currently lecturing on development studies, urban environmental management, urban poverty alleviation and research methodologies in developing countries. She is lecturing at the C.M. Kan Institute and researcher at AMIDSt. Her research interests include: urban environmental movements, Local Agenda 21 planning methodologies and leadership characteristics. She is the director of the Master's programme International Development Studies.

Leonie Janssen-Jansen

Leonie Janssen-Jansen is a post doc researcher at UvA research center AMIDSt (Amsterdam institute for Metropolitan and International Development Studies). She holds a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional planning from the Universiteit Utrecht. Before starting her Ph.D. research, Leonie Janssen-Jansen has also been a researcher at the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations in the Netherlands. She is actively involved in the Dutch Association of Planners and Urban Designers (BNSP). Her teaching, research and publications focus on regional planning, Growth Management, regional governance, regionalisation, institutional planning.

Barak Kalir

Barak Kalir is an anthropologist and a member of the Amsterdam School for Social Science Research. He is the Programme Director and Academic Advisor of the Social Theory and Public Affairs programme. His specializations include: international immigration, ethnic and religious dynamics among migrant groups, transnationalism, and notions of legality. He is currently coordinating a research programme entitled: Illegal but Licit: Transnational Flows and Permissive Polities in Asia, within which he carries a multisided fieldwork among Chinese labourers in Israel and upon their return in China.

Winny Koster

Winny Koster is a medical anthropologtist who worked for fourteen years in health-related development programmes, mainly in Africa. In April 2003 she defended het PhD thesis 'Secret strategies', on women and obortion in Yoruba society, Nigeria. The thesis was based on a three year applied participatoryresearch project of fertility regulation practices among the Yoruba. She presently teaches at the department of Anthropology.

Kristoffel Lieten

Kristoffel Lieten studied at Antwerp, Reading, New Delhi and Nijmegen where he defended his Ph.D. thesis on the history of the trade union movement in Bombay. He holds the chair of Child Labour Studies at the University of Amsterdam and at the International Institute of Social History. Since 1978, he has been associated with the Anthropological-Sociological Centre at the University of Amsterdam. He is also a visiting professor at the Institute of Human Development in New Delhi. Jan van Luxemburg

Jan van Luxemburg (1936) studied classical languages and comparative literature at the University of Amsterdam. In 1993 he took his PhD by defending his study Rhetoric and Pleasure, in which he analysed the rhetoric and the implied ideologies in four 19th century European novels. With Mieke Bal and Willem Weststeijn he published two Dutch books on literary theory. He regularly published and publishes in Dutch, American, Norwegian, and South African journals. Recently he published an article about Abelard and Heloise, and pieces about Mason and Dixon, and Against the Day by Thomas Pynchon. Jan van Luxemburg is married, father of two children, and grandfather of four children.

Jeannette Mak

Dr. Jeannette Mak has been the coordinator of the Amsterdam Center for Conflict Studies (ACS) since January 1st 2005. In that capacity, she is responsible for strengthening the curriculum and stimulating multidisciplinary research on conflict and conflict transformation at the University of Amsterdam, as well as increase public debate on the issue. Jeannette has a background in European Politics (PhD obtained from the European University Institute in Florence in 2002). Her main research interest concern the European public sphere, new forms of governance and informal politics.

Ram Manikkalingam

Ram Manikkalingam is a Visiting Professor at the Department of Political Science, Universiteit van Amsterdam and an Advisor to the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, Geneva. He was Senior Advisor on the Peace Process with the Tamil Tigers to the previous President of Sri Lanka. He was an Advisor on Peace and Security to the Rockefeller Foundation where he led the Foundation’s work in this area, including the setting up of a new organisation to report on the UN Security Council and global initiatives related to preventing conflict. Ram has a bachelors in physics and a doctorate in political philosophy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is currently working on a manuscript on liberalism, pluralism and group conflict. He is also in the International Advisory Group of the Security Council Report and the East West Management Institute, both based in New York, and the Neelan Tiruchelvam Trust, based in Sri Lanka.

Anne-Laure Masclé-Allemand

Dr Anne-Laure Mascle-Allemand did her doctoral studies at the university of Toulouse in quantitative economics. The main goal of her PhD dissertation is to highlight some unexpected reactions of employers and workers to labour market institutions. From November 2006, she joined AIAS as a postdoctoral fellow with a specialising in the impact of labour market institutions on low-wage employment.

Otto van den Muijzenberg

Otto van den Muijzenberg is a professor emeritus in Sociology and the Modern History of 'Non-Western' Societies at the Universiteit van Amsterdam as well as a board member of the Amsterdam School for Social Science Research (ASSR) and Chairman/Convenor of the 7th International Conference on Philippine Studies (7th ICOPHIL). His regional interest being South and Southeast Asia, Philippines, Indonesia, and India, his work looks into human geography, Asian anthropology and sociology, labour relations, local histories, as well as theoretical and organisational aspects of developments in Southeast Asian studies in the Netherlands.

Sako Musterd

finished his PhD research in 1985 with a dissertation on urban transformation processes. As off 1995 he is a full professor of Urban Geography at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. He published extensively on urban change, segregation, integration and neighbourhood effects; recently he is also involved in major international comparative research focusing on the conditions required for the settlement of creative and knowledge intensive industries. Musterd has also been involved in numerous other functions, most recently as an advisor of the mayor and aldermen of the municipality of Amsterdam on strategic spatial and social issues. He is chairman of the board of the Netherlands Graduate School of Urban and Regional Research. Most recent book: Neighbourhoods of Poverty (Palgrave Macmillan). Olga Nieuwenhuys

Olga Nieuwenhuys studied Sociology and Social Anthropology at the Universities of Paris and Amsterdam. She worked as a researcher in India and as a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in children's work and welfare in the context of the survival strategies of poor households in rural and urban settings. She is the author of Children's Lifeworlds: Gender, welfare and labour in the developing world (London and New York: Routledge, 1994) and of a number of scholarly articles and reports. She is currently in charge of coordinating the research and training programme "Child Welfare for the Urban Poor in India and Ethiopia".

Mario Novelli

Mario Novelli is a lecturer in International development. He lectures on the IDS Masters programme, co-teaches the political economy of development course, and gives occasional lectures on the research methodology course. He also coordinates the International Development Studies Lecture Series. His research interests explore the relationship between globalisation, education and international development and he is centrally involved in the IS Academy on Quality Education - a joint intitiative between Amidst and the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Jacobijn Olthoff is a lecturer in International Development Studies at the UvA and co-responsible for the European Master Program ‘Children’s Rights’. She is also teaching in the anthropology department at University College of Utrecht University. In May 2006, she finished her PhD research in anthropology on teenage girls in the poor migrant neighborhoods of Lima, Peru. Wim Ostendorf (1948) is associate professor in Urban Geography at AMIDSt, Universiteit van Amsterdam. In his research he concentrates on processes of urbanization and on urban problems in metropolitan areas regarding population, housing, segregation and the impact of concentrated poverty. Bowen Paulle

Bowen Paulle (Phd., Univ of Amsterdam, 2005) is an independent researcher, policy advisor and interventionist associated with The Bridge Research Partnership. Along side his work with professionals and policy makers in primary and secondary education, he has lectured at the University of Amsterdam since 2004. Paulle's main interest is in the reproduction and transformation of mechanisms of exclusion. More specific interests include (educational policy related to) de-segregation, "race" and "ethnicity" as principles of social vision and division, bodies and (collective) emotions as modalities of group formation, gender dynamics, classical and contemporary social theory.

Willem Salet

Willem Salet is Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the UvA research center AMIDSt (Amsterdam institute for Metropolitan and International Development Studies). Previously, he was appointed at the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy, part-time professor of Regional Governance at the Technical University Delft, and scientific director of the Amsterdam study center for Metropolitan Studies (AME).
As a sociologist and urban and regional planner he is specialized in the role of planning and governance in society and focuses on the coordination of public and private action related to urban and regional development in Europe . He takes an institutional approach into issues of spatial planning and policy. Keywords of his main research are strategic spatial planning, institutions and planning, planning and law, planning and sociology, metropolitan governance and spatial and institutional development in European regions.

Rachel Spronk teaches sexuality studies at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and she completed her Ph.D. at the Amsterdam School for Social-science Research (ASSR), both at the University of Amsterdam. Her research interests are sexuality in the context of social, economic and political transformations in postcolonial societies; the bodily experience or sensuality of sex; and the further theorising of sexuality. Antoni Verger

Antoni Verger was awarded a PhD on Sociology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) for his work on the WTO/GATS and the politics of Education. Sikko Visscher lectures on historical and contemporary themes in Asian Studies at the Universiteit van Amsterdam, and is the Academic Advisor and Coordinator of the CAS programme. His area of expertise is Southeast Asia, particularly Singapore and Malaysia and he focuses on processes of social and economic development, ethnic entrepreneurship and its institutions, and the Ethnic Chinese diaspora.

Jelle Visser

Jelle Visser is professor in the sociology of labour and organisation at the University of Amsterdam and is also the scientific director of AIAS. He is connected to the Max Planck Intstitut für Gesellschaftsforschung in Cologne. Previously he worked for the European University Institute in Florence and was a guest professor in Mannheim, Madison-Wisconsin, Stanford and Oxford University. Jelle Visser also works as a consultant for international organisations like the OECD, the ILO and the European Union.

Janelle Ward

Janelle Ward is a PhD candidate at the Amsterdam School of Communications Research (ASCoR) and a lecturer at the International School for Humanities and Social Sciences (ISHSS). She teaches Crash Course – Introduction to Research Methodology, New Media, Politics and Youth, and Communication & Society. Her research interests include theoretical issues of democracy and citizenship, online media, and young people. She has recently published in the Harvard International Journal of Press/Politics and Information Polity.
